The Hanbury Brown and Twiss effect

چکیده

If we had just 2Nk in the sum, this would be proportional to the energy of each mode times the number of quanta in each mode, summed over all modes. In fact, we have a ‘zero point’ contribution even when Nk = 0. It has exactly the same origin as the 12~ω ground state energy of the simple harmonic oscillator. In this case, the infinite number of modes means that the sum in Eq. (3) is not convergent. Fortunately, this is not what a real experiment measures. To detect light when the number of photons is small we might use a device like a photomultiplier, which harnesses the photoelectric effect to convert a photon into a current pulse, destroying it in the process. Thus it is clear that we should have 2Nk in the sum. We account for this property of the detector by arranging the mode operators inside any quantitiy that we measure in normal order. That

The colored Hanbury Brown–Twiss effect

The Hanbury Brown-Twiss effect is one of the celebrated phenomenologies of modern physics that accommodates equally well classical (interferences of waves) and quantum (correlations between indistinguishable particles) interpretations. The effect was discovered in the late thirties with a basic observation of Hanbury Brown that radio-pulses from two distinct antennas generate signals on the osc...

INTRODGTION TO INTENSITY INTERFEROMETRY FOR NUCLEAR - PARTICLE PHYSICISTS ' Alan Katz

The Hanbury-Brown and Twiss method for measuring the radii of stars also has interesting applications in other realms of physics. Intensity interferometry, the technique used by Hanbury-Brown and Twiss for their star measurements, should yield analogous information about the angular .-sizes of excited particles and nuclei, which emit secondary particles. In this report, we interpret such emissi...

Hanbury Brown and Twiss interferometry with twisted light.

The rich physics exhibited by random optical wave fields permitted Hanbury Brown and Twiss to unveil fundamental aspects of light. Furthermore, it has been recognized that optical vortices are ubiquitous in random light and that the phase distribution around these optical singularities imprints a spectrum of orbital angular momentum onto a light field. We demonstrate that random fluctuations of...

Three-dimensional measurement of the Hanbury Brown Twiss effect for degenerate and non-degenerate bosonic ensembles

We have studied 2-body correlations of atoms in an expanding cloud above and below the Bose-Einstein condensation threshold. The observed correlation function for a thermal cloud shows a bunching behavior, while the correlation is flat for a coherent sample. These quantum correlations are the atomic analogue of the Hanbury Brown Twiss effect. We observe the effect in three dimensions and study ...

Hanbury Brown-Twiss interference of anyons.

We present a study of a Hanbury Brown-Twiss interferometer realized with anyons. Such a device can directly probe entanglement and fractional statistics of initially uncorrelated particles. We calculate Hanbury Brown-Twiss cross correlations of Abelian Laughlin anyons. The correlations we calculate exhibit partial bunching similar to bosons, indicating a substantial statistical transmutation fr...
